FAIR
CITY SPOTLIGHT AT THE AXE
Massive
congratulations to RTÉ's 'Fair City' star Pat
Nolan on winning the Best Soap Actor Award at the Rose
d'Or Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland from the Battle
of the Axe. Pat has made valuable contributions to the
Battle of the Axe through Black Box theatre company.
---------------------
Fair
City's Fran Healy won Battle of the Axe twice recently
with excellent performances. We wish her well on her
return to Scotland.
-----------------------
And
Brendan Bourke delivers a great performance as the Bank
Manager in Fair City filling Mondo's pockets with Dosh
to start his new business. All credit to him as Roy
Keane would say!!

NAKED
CAMERA
RTE
2's Naked Camera, the show everyone's talking about
features Battle of the Axe favourite Maeve Higgins.
Her characters mess with the emotions of many un-expecting
prospects with great effect on this candid camera show.
The performance also features the great PJ Gallagher
and Patrick McDonnell. Maeve has won the Battle of the
Axe more times than we can remember and continues to
improve as a performer. We look forward to seeing more
of her in the future and wish her well.

'UP TO NOW!!'
So
many popular artistes on the entertainment circuit
these days, first cut their cloth at the battleoftheaxe.com:
Names such as Dave McSavage (Late Late Show and Vicar
St), Paddy Casey (Meteor Irish Music Award winner
2004), James Goldsbury, Karl Spain & Neil Delimer
(RTE comedy Award winners, Eddie Naessens (ex Fair
City & Bull Island, & RTE comedy finalist),
Declan Rooney (RTE comedy finalist), Matt Saddlier
(Channel 4/BBC & RTE finalist), Jerome Holland
(RTE comedy finalist), Peter Fox (2FM finalist), Crusty
(Hot Press finalist), .....and Pennytration (Channel
4 & Today FM finalist).
INTERNATIONAL
ACTS AT THE AXE
Celebrated
international stand-up comics who have appeared at
the Battle of the Axe have included one of Australia's
most favoured acts that is Jimeoin.
Outstanding Canadian TV presenter and Stand-up comedian
Rick Bronson gave one of the best ever performances
at the Battle of the Axe. He dropped in while filming
his TV programme in Dublin. The Tourist, a television
series he created, hosted and co-wrote, is now a hit
in 22 countries, and his recent national comedy special,
Comedy Now Presents Rick Bronson, was among the highest
rated in Canadian history.
A popular visitor, personal friend and recipient of
the Battle of the Axe is Dr Kevin Fitzgerald the star
of Animal Planet's "Emergency Vets". He
is also well know for his Comic talents and Kevin
has had the privilege of opening in concert for such
legendary performers as Diana Ross and Bob Hope. Kevin
has also worked in concert as a headline comedian
or as the opening act for bands like The Neville Brothers,
Emmy Lou Harris, The Corrs and The Temptations. He
has appeared at such prestigious venues as The Grand
'Ol Oprey and The House of Blues. You may also have
seen him on NBC's Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, The
Maury Povich Show, A&E's Comedy on the Road, TNN's
Crooke and Chase or as host of HBO's "Women of
the Night." We hope top see him back at the Axe
in the near future.
When no one else could get a laugh we threw Jimmy
Shubert in at the deep end at the Axe and he obliged.
It was Jimmy's scene-stealing performance as the lollipop-sucking
strip club bouncer in Columbia Pictures' GO, directed
by Doug Liman (SWINGERS), that jumpstarted his film
career. Jimmy earned parts on numerous television
shows including the WB series ANGEL, and as Roger
Daltry's road manager in Showtime's RUDE AWAKENINGS
. So why did we leave him hanging around the staircase
for two hours before we put him on stage we will never
know!!
Over 1000 performers have graced its stage since its
conception nearly 8 Years ago. Not a lot of people
know that the Ha’ Penny Bridge Inn has also housed
such noted acts as Dermot Morgan (RIP) (Father Ted),
Tommy Tiernan, Jason Byrne, Alan Davis (Cracker),
Alex Lyons (BBC produced writer), Pat McDonald (Don’t
Feed the Gondolas), The Nualas, Anne Lillis, Anne
Gildea, Tara Flynn, Barry Murphy (Aprés Match)
and Deirdre O’Kane. The bar was a popular frequenting
place for Thin Lizzy in their early days and the pub
was once owned by the great Irish tenor Josef Locke.
The present battleoftheaxe.com continues
to introduce fresh new acts
to the entertainment world.
Progressive acts to watch out for include singer/songwriters
Damien Davis, James Cramer, Chris Morrin and Peter
Doran. Comedians making strong waves are John Colleary,
Bernard O’Shea, Tom Blanchfield and MC/Comedian Andrew
Stanley
is mixing it with the best at the moment.
The
Future
So
why not drop over and see a show that’s a significant
contributor to the future of Irish entertainment unfold
at its conception any Tuesday
nite 9.30pm
upstairs at the Ha’ Penny Bridge Inn.

2005
HERE WE COME!
What a brilliant
year it has been at the Battle of the Axe as we look forward
to 2005. The good news is that you have just missed
the best year on record at the Battle of the Axe with
great crowds and
some great acts.
In fact the show is currently recovering from a sensational
line-up during the Bulmer's Comedy Festival Orchard Path that
included Australia's No 1 Jim Eoin, LA hit-man Jimmy Shubert,
ex-Fair City
& Bull Island man Eddie Naessens and Irish Comedy Award
winner James Goldsbury.
In particular, noted by many observers was the outstanding performance
from top street performer/Late Late Show act Dave McSavage on
the 2nd night, catapulted Battle of the Axe onto the year's
highlights on the Dublin comedy scene. Watch-out for McSavage
as he tours around Ireland this winter.
Having
being slightly put out during the comedy festival the Singer/songwriters
are back with a bang alongside the comedians and the shows are
benefiting big time from their talent.
Already spots on the show for performers are filling up very
quickly and ahead of schedule until the end of Jan 05 . A number
of high profile acts have already rung in to confirm that they
will be dropping in by the end of the year. So you never know
who and when some of these specials might be dropping by, but
it will defiantly be a Tuesday nite soon at the Axe!! As usual
we have a highly-flavoured winter of fun to look forward to
at the Battle of the Axe.

singer/songwriter showcase 04
Players
Theatre, Trinity College
This recent show at Players Theatre was one of the greatest
nights in the 7 year history of the Battle of the Axe. Each
and every act gave it their all with very strong performances
all round.
The performers selected from their impressive displays at the
regular Tuesday nite Battle of the Axe over the past year were
John Leech, Joey Joe the Rapper, Jon Dylan,
Chris Morrin and Tomas Ward.
While many were asking who was the special guest before the
show, by the end of the nite everybody knew that James Cramer
is one of the most charismatic entertainers with great songs
and talent that you will find in Dublin city at the moment.
If Bono ever needs a rest, James Cramer can certainly deputise!
The professional support of the Staff at Players Theatre played
a huge part in the delivery of this extremely successful production
and many thanks to them.

battleoftheaxe.com
comedy showcase 04
Irish
Film Institute, Temple Bar
After such a successful Singer/songwriter showcase the
comedy showcase had a difficult act to follow. While all
comedians excelled themselves at the IFI, it is regarded by
most observers at the club that for the first time in 7 years
the singer/songwriters have had just the edge on their comic
counterparts over the past year.
The nite's MC was Mr. Pierce Whelehan who performed heroics
in the production. First comic John Colleary had such a massively
good opening performance that it was a penalty
kick for the rest of the performers.
Tom Blanchfield, Donal McCarthy, & John Lynn with ease succeeded.
Keith Farnan not only scored his penalty but also ably passed
the baton successfully to David Muyllaert, Eoin Fallon and Robbie
Black, all who capitalised and added to their positive introductions
to the comedy circuit.
Finally comic Bernard O’ Shea, regarded as the best
new comedian over the past year at the Battle of the Axe
proved the reason why.
Singer/Songwriters James Cramer and Damien
Davis opened and concluded as valuable special guest musical
supports to the show.
Many thanks to the Irish Film Institute Management and Staff,
for their support at the show. Extreme appreciation to Dave
on
sound, who had the most challenging job of handling
amplification in the great open space of the IFI.
Although Battle of the Axe was unable to afford the filming
of the performance, Fandango Productions very kindly volunteered
their services and ensured the programme was recorded on film.
If you would like a copy of the video please email: fandango@ireland.com
If anyone out there would like to sponsor the production
of a documentary on the show it would be more
than gratefully appreciated.
Please email battleoftheaxe@hotmail.com
if interested.
A
nice donation has been made to charity by the show.
The charity selected for the contribution was
The Little Flower, Meath St, Dublin 8.
They provide Penny Dinners to the less fortunate in Dublin society
daily. Many thanks, to the audience and performers for sharing.

CONGRATULATIONS!!
Massive congratulations
to Andrew Stanley who has been announced as the MC
of the Year for 2003 by the Artistic Board of Directors
at the Battle of the Axe. He follows in the footsteps of such
successful MC’s at the Battle of the Axe as Eddie Naessens,
Jack Kincade, Neil Delemere, Eoin Sweeney and Alex Lyons. Over
the past number of years Andrew has built up his material, performance
delivery and confidence to a new found professional level that
he can now carry onto any stage in the world if he chooses.
As somebody once said that if you make it at the Battle of the
Axe you can make it anywhere! As the winner he gets to MC the
Christmas Show on Dec 23rd when he will presented
with his award. Already, it sounds like
a great night
to look forward to. Again, well done Andrew from all your fellow
performers and friends at the Battle of the Axe.

Reviews!
February 13th, Unlucky
for some saw Tony Ferns as MC. Philadelphian Comedian Bill Keough
flew in to Dublin with his family to specially perform to a
sold
out show. Back by popular
demand he didn’t disappoint and shared the nite's honours with
Singer/Songwriter duo, Marina from Sweden and Gavin from
Dublin.
February 6th, MC Carl
Walters moved the over packed show at quick fire pace. Top performances
all round especially from James Goldsbury & Simon O’ Leary.
However stand –up Lady stole
the show.
January 30th, Declan
Rooney must be one of the best of the current crop of up-coming
comedians around. A jammed audience loved him. Definitely a
contender for future awards, if he wants them!!! Jeff Keogh
was as reliable as ever as MC on the nite.
January23rd, A chocker
block nite of audience and acts saw, Simon O’Leary excel as
MC and Comedian Steve Cummins walk away with the ROAST PLASTIC
DUCK.

received
a visit from THE SLATE magazine...
We
got a review in the Slate mag., in its January edition. Moral
of the story: "the
axe got Slated!". But at least they paid a visit.
It's a brilliant read too.

Congratulations!!!
...are
in order for joint winners of the RTÉ new comedy awards, James
Goldsbury and Karl Spain, two of the shows most popular players!

Swearing
& Bad Language Notice to All Performers!
Although
we are not prudes at the ,
continued use of swearing and bad language is not really funny
and is not the art of a good comedian. Often performers who
have good material let their delivery down with its use. When
it's used to effect it can be great, but depending on it as
material, then I'm afraid you're in the wrong game. Performers
won't get away with it on other stages and clubs in Dublin,
so you might as well learn how to perform without it
at the Axe!!!
Equipment:
Performers please respect and treat all equipment well at the
show.

| Cryptic
Comedy Saturday November 2nd
Our
Cryptic Comedy Show: a gig for peanuts, at The Crypt at
Dublin Castle was a huge success. A selection of New Acts from
the battleoftheaxe.com did themselves and the Axe very proud.
MC Jack Kincade from SPIN 103.8 rocked the joint. Wally Patrone
was as strong an opening act as was Paul Crowley in finishing.
Carlow comedians Kathleen O’Rourke and Padraig Fox performed
as if they were doing stand-up for the past 10 years, cool and
confident cocky Carlow heads on young shoulders!!! That’s what
the country needs!!! O’ Reilly Aer aka French Nick & Mark
Stanley are proving to be the best new sketch act in Ireland
at the moment and you will hear a lot about them in times to
come. Brian McMahon ensured the smooth running of the show with
his talent on lights and sound.
Besides
these excellent performers there are many more like them down
at the battleoftheaxe.com on Tuesday nights. They were the lucky
ones to have got picked for this pilot show.
Who
knows it could be you or your mate next time round if there
is next time!! Time is very tight at this end at the moment.
Experimentation is the name of the game. Many thanks to the
Crypt staff and management for their support of show production.

Obituaries
Liam O Shaughnessy, one
of the bar owners, passed away recently. We at the Battleoftheaxe.com
would like to express our deepest sympathy to his family and
in particular to his wife Mary and his son Myles on their tragic
loss. Liam gave us the space & support to perform at his
pub The Ha’ Penny Bridge Inn, when many other greedy businesses
would not even give us a chance to perform in Dublin. Liam played
a major part in helping to make Battleoftheaxe.com the success
that it is and what is described as ‘an Irish Institution’ according
to many. If you can pull any strings in our favour from where
you are, we will gladly accept. May you Rest in Peace.
....And Richard Harris we miss
you too. You were a brilliant Bull McCabe. May you Rest in Peace
as well.

The show lost a great patron of the club in
May 2000, the one and only Christopher Daybell R.I.P. He is
a great loss to the show and all his fellow performing artiste's
/ audiences / friends miss him too. His poems and writings were
and still are loved by many. We hope his kind nature and
his concern for those less fortunate than ourselves will never
be forgotten. Long live Christopher Daybell's spirit.
